Prevention is better than cure.
Number of useful tips to prevent your eBike from being stolen.
Out of every ten electric bicycles sold, no less than one is stolen. Do you want to prevent this from becoming your precious eBike? Then park your bicycle safely. You can read in this article how you can best protect your bicycle against grabbing thieves.
Use two locks
Every e-bike is equipped with a ring lock. Most ring locks have an ART quality mark and are therefore approved by the ART foundation (which also includes the ANWB). However, this does not mean that it is sufficient to only lock your eBike with a ring lock. It is best to use two locks.
We recommend that you purchase one of the following locks to lock your e-bike extra securely:
-
A chain lock with ART 2 quality mark or higher.
-
A folding lock with ART 2 quality mark or higher.
-
A shackle lock with ART 2 quality mark or higher.
Especially if you have taken out theft insurance for your e-bike, it is important to buy a lock with at least an ART 2 quality mark. If you have a lock without a quality mark, you will not receive any money from the insurance company if your bicycle is indeed stolen.
Secure your bike to something
It is best to secure the second lock that you have purchased for your electric bicycle to something. This can be a tree, but also a lamppost or another bicycle. If you secure your bicycle to an object, thieves cannot simply load your bicycle into a vehicle. Unfortunately, this happens often, so it is not a superfluous luxury to tie your bike to something.
Do not let the lock of your bicycle hang on the ground
Many people fix the extra lock of their e-bike, for example the chain lock, in a low place. This causes the lock to hang on the floor. This seems like a good decision, were it not for the fact that thieves often use stones to break a lock. If your chain, cable or shackle lock is on the ground, you make it very easy for thieves to get into the action with a stone. It is therefore best to secure the lock of your bicycle at a higher location.
Park your bicycle in a guarded parking
Even if you use good locks to secure your eBike, it can be stolen. After all, even locks with high ART quality marks can always be broken open after a long time of trying. Do you want to be on the safe side? Then park your bicycle in a guarded parking.
Engrave your eBike
Have your bicycle engraved with, for example, your zip code and house number. This makes the bicycle more difficult to resell, because it is clearly visible that the bicycle already has (had) an owner. Did you know that this is free in some municipalities? So it can't hurt to check this with your municipality.
Bring your saddle
You can easily adjust the height of the saddle on many bicycles. This also makes it possible to take your saddle with you in its entirety. A bicycle without a saddle is first of all annoying to take with you and, moreover, your eBike without a saddle is worth less and therefore less attractive to take with you.
Place your bike in plain sight
Is there no guarded parking nearby? Then don't park your bike in a dark alley or in another inconspicuous place, but put your bike in plain sight. Thieves prefer not to operate in a place where everyone can see them. If you park your bicycle in a place where many people come and where your bicycle is clearly visible, the chance of theft is smaller. Of course you still lock your bike properly.
