How do you optimize the range of your battery.
Useful tips to be able to cycle even further with the battery.
How far you can drive on a single battery charge depends not only on the battery capacity [indicated in watt hours, Wh], but also on the power of the motor, the selected assistance level, your weight and other external factors such as the road surface, the wind , temperature and several other factors.
In addition, there are a number of aspects that you can influence to increase and optimize the range of your battery:
1. Avoid unnecessary stops and starts.
Whenever possible, try to avoid too many stops and starts. A lot of acceleration requires extra energy. Riding with a constant cadence and even pressure on the pedals ensures that the drive system needs to use less energy. This saves energy and increases the range.
2. Make sure your tires are not too soft.
The correct tire pressure ensures that your rolling resistance is minimal with the road surface where you cycle. The softer the tires, the higher the rolling resistance, which means the engine has to deliver more power and therefore requires more from the battery.
3. The more heavily your bicycle is loaded, the shorter your range becomes.
Heavy luggage and unnecessary ballast affect the range of your eBike. The heavier your luggage or ballast, the more the range decreases. Particularly for long tour rides, it is important that you think carefully in advance about what you want to take with you.
4. Do not drive unnecessarily in a gear that is too heavy.
In general, the cadence should not be too slow. The efficiency of your drive system improves as your cadence increases. When you pedal faster [more revolutions per minute] your range will increase. We advise not to pedal too hard unnecessarily [too heavy | high gear]. You can increase your range when your cadence is approximately 50-80 revolutions per minute. At that cadence you optimize power consumption and increase the range.
5. Maintain your eBike properly.
This may seem obvious, but good maintenance increases your range. When your electric bicycle is maintained [chain, drive system and components are properly maintained], this will reduce friction and increase your range. It is also important that you charge the battery correctly. The best temperature at which the battery performs optimally is around 20 degrees Celsius. In good weather it is wise and important not to leave the battery unnecessarily in the cold. During cold periods it is wise to charge the battery at room temperature. At low temperatures it may be useful to drive with a high level of assistance. The higher discharge current ensures that the battery heats up automatically. Never run the battery completely empty, but charge the battery when you still have a residual charge of 10%.
6. Whenever possible, avoid too many traffic lights and undulating terrain.
When you have to go somewhere, try to avoid steep slopes or traffic lights if possible. In those cases, the engine will have to work harder and require more power from the battery. The shortest or fastest route does not always have to be the most efficient route for your battery.
